Sarah Maximiek is Subject Librarian for Political Science, Public Administration and Government Documents; Erin Rushton is Subject Librarian/Coordinator of Digital Reference Services; and Elizabeth Brown is Scholarly Communications and Library Grants Officer, all at Binghamton University, SUNY; e-mail: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. The authors would like to extend their gratitude to their past and current colleagues who helped with the transcript coding project: Nancy Abashian, Abigail Bordeaux, Katharine Bouman, Tina Clemo, Angelique Jenks-Brown; and to Alesia McManus and Dave Vose for their assistance on the project. © Sarah Maximiek, Erin Rushton, and Elizabeth Brown After one year of providing virtual reference service through an instant messaging (IM) service, Binghamton University (BU) Libraries, under the purview of its Digital Reference Committee (DRC), undertook a study of collected session transcripts. The goals of this work were to determine who was using the IM service and why; if staffing for the service was adequate and met our in-person reference standards; and if improvements to the libraries’ existing reference services were needed.

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) enables the convergence of voice, data, and multimedia services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), Video over IP, push-to-talk, presence or instant messaging services and so. IMS is well integrated with existing voice and data networks, while adopting many of their key characteristics. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) provides a pathway to build a single unified ne...
متن کاملA Telephone Number Mapping (ENUM) Service Registration for Instant Messaging (IM) Services
Instant Messaging (IM) is a service defined in RFC 2778 [6] that allows users to send and receive typically short, often textual messages in near real-time. The IETF has defined a generic URI used to identify an IM service for a particular resource: the ’im:’ URI scheme (defined in RFC 3861 [4]). RFC 3861 [4] also defines rules for discovering service running specific protocols, such as SIP (th...
متن کاملThe Effectiveness of Whitelisting: a User-Study
We believe this paper is the first extensive user-study of whitelisting email addresses. While whitelists are common in social networking and instant messaging (e.g., buddylists), they have not caught on in email systems. Instead, most of us use spam filters that try to identify all the senders we do not want to accept email from. With whitelists we only need to identify the much smaller set of...
متن کاملEnergy-aware QoS for application sessions across multiple protocol domains in mobile computing
The proliferation of heterogeneous devices and diverse networking technologies demands flexible models to guarantee the quality-of-service (QoS) at the application session level, which is a common behavior of many network-centric applications, e.g., Web browsing and Instant messaging. Several QoS models have been proposed for heterogeneous wired/wireless environments. However, we envision that ...
